Tibor K. Thomas (Tiberiu Krausz) was born in Fagaras, Romania, on April 21, 1919.
The death of his father when Tibor was seven left his mother alone with four small children. Tibor was soon obliged to earn his own living and at around the age of eleven began to work, while continuing to attend the School of Arts and Crafts. After the start of the war, Tibor was sent to a labour camp where he became an active member of the anti Nazi resistance. He continued to draw portraits of his comrades and even of the Romanian soldiers and officers.
After the war Thomas enrolled in the Bucharest Fine Arts Institute where he taught from 1950 to 1969. During this period he was a regular participant in official exhibitions at home and abroad, in the Soviet Union, the East block countries and China and he received many distinctions and commissions.
In 1969, together with his wife Judith, an art critic, and son Peter, an art student, they escaped the totalitarian regime of Romania and after a stay in Rome they established themselves in Montreal in 1970.
In Canada his painting underwent fundamental changes. His palette became richer and more brilliant and the subjects more personal – landscapes, marinas, still lifes and portraits. The chromatic scale alternates between patches of warm and cold colours, giving the canvasses an arresting dynamism and spontaneity.
Tibor continued to paint, travel and exhibit until his death in 2010.
Tibor K. Thomas participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions and his works are part of private and public collections around the world.

Tibor K. Thomas est né à Fagaras, Roumanie, le 21 avril 1919.
La mort de son père, lorsque Tibor avait 7 ans, a laissé sa mère avec 4 enfants en bas-âge. Tibor a du donc gagner sa vie très tôt et vers 11 ans a commencé à travailler, tout en suivant les cours de l’École des Arts et Métiers.
Après le début de la 2éme guerre mondiale, Tibor a été interné dans un camp de travail ou il est devenu membre actif de la résistance antinazie. Il a continué à dessiner, des portraits de ses camarades et même des soldats et officiers roumains qui gardaient le camp.
Après la guerre Tibor s’est inscrit à l’Institut de Beaux-arts de Bucarest, ou, après ses études, il a enseigné entre 1950 et 1969. Durant toute cette période il a participé à des expositions, tant en Roumanie qu’à l’étranger, en Union Soviétique, les pays de l’est et la Chine. Il a été le récipiendaire de nombreux prix et commissions.
En 1969, ensemble avec son épouse Judith, critique d’art, et son fils Peter, étudiant aux Beaux-arts, il s’enfuit du régime totalitaire roumain et après un séjour à Rome, il s’établi à Montréal en 1970.
Au Canada, sa peinture a fondamentalement changé. Sa palette est devenue plus lumineuse, les couleurs plus riches et les sujets plus personnels – des paysages, des marines, des nature-mortes et des portraits. L’échelle chromatique alterne entre couleurs chaudes et froides, donnant aux toiles un dynamisme et une spontanéité remarquables. Tibor a continué à peindre, voyager et exposé jusqu’à sa mort en 2010.
